Everything I've had at Mullets is good or better. My only regret is I've only gone there once for breakfast...which might have their best dishes (from what I hear). I've had the Po'Boys, which are awesome; a couple different burgers, which were good; and the pizza, which was solid. The theme is really awesome and it is nice that is walking distance to the baseball stadium. My favorite Po'Boy is the Sandberg though which I recommend everyone to try. For my full review and pictures of the Sandberg at Mullets and other Des Moines eateries, check out my blog. fooddmawesome.blogspot.c…

Mullets When it comes to judging a place for atmosphere and or décor a person has to decide to either judge on what they like or if the place pulled off the look they were going for. Mullets definitely pulled off what they were going for. Within reach of where I was sitting there were pictures of Patrick Swayze, Mario Lopez, and Billy Ray Cyrus all sporting, yes mullets. I actually caught myself looking for someone with an actual mullet. The service was very good and the waitress knowledgeable she did mess up one of the orders but completely owned up to it. We started out with 1/2 orders of both nachos and onion rings. I always appreciated the option of half orders of appetizers. The onion rings were the thin stringy type which can tend to be greasy these were not at all. When we ordered I said no nachos for me but when they arrived I could not help but try them. They were without a doubt the best nachos I have ever had. They were layered with just the right amount of cheese and toppings. At the table we had a Wild West burger with bacon and bbq sauce, a cheese burger, a set of sliders, a strawberry gouda turkey sandwich, and possibly the highlight of the meal were the sweet potato tater tots that were served with a marshmallow sauce that was to die for. It was immediately classified as a dessert. An overall great place to eat with a great view of the Des Moines skyline. Usually get nachos with Italian sausage, have always bragged them up. Tonight something missing, not as good as usual. Great bartenders.

Another DM theme type establishment. I wonder why almost every new venture in town has to have a theme now, as if the drinks and food just can't stand on their own. The good news is that this place is great minus the mullet stuff everywhere. The food is great, the servers are great, and if you get to go in the summer the environment is nice as well. The chili is one of the best in the city and they have a decent beer selection as well.

I went to Mullets with my Fiance and her grandmother off of a suggestion from a friend and found it was even better than what they had described. The service was good and the atmosphere was fun. It's a good place to go on a very casual lunch or dinner. The Nachos where Fantastic, and I plan on going back sometime soon. Overall it was good food for a good price.

I have no complaints about this place. Love that there are so many options for seating and its not overly themed. I will have to say I had beer which was cold and the Gringo burger and it was really good. Probably one of the better burgers I have had in town. Decent crowd too. Sometimes you go into those places not knowing what to expect but very decent place and will for sure return!

Not bad. Actually, not bad at all. While I appreciate places like El Bait Shop and the High Life Lounge, I was expecting Mullets to be an overused cliche of a theme bar. As Ricky T. rightly pointed out, Mullets isn't 'overly themed.' This is a nice surprise. The atmosphere was right on - not trying too hard but you still get the picture (literally - photos of mullets casually occupy the walls). Great outdoor patio with a perfect view of downtown. Pitchers of beer were about $9 - fair enough. Mandarin vodka/soda was only $4. Score. And the food menu was quite extensive. There were lots of bar-type dishes on the menu, and the food here is GOOD. The pizza was delish. Oh, and they have breakfast here (random)... We'll be back - without a doubt!

I stopped here with my girlfriend on our way through town expecting run-of-the-mill bar food, but I was pleasantly surprised to find a very diverse menu with a lot of items made in house! The Wild West burger was delicious, and anything cajun is a solid bet as well. Also, if you go for the nachos, get the brisket and skip the nacho cheese. Solid beer list and good service. I'll be back for sure! Not sure what the night life is like, but it was pretty relaxed on a Sunday evening.

Went with a large group tonight right before an iCubs game. It might have been a function of the game, but it took FOREVER to get a beer. And the bartender did not look pleased at all. Other than that...neat place! Cool outdoor seating. Live music tonight during/after the game. Lots of great beer selections. Almost no complaints!

This is a brand-new spot right across the river from Principal Park and right off the bike path. In fact, it seems like the perfect pit stop if you're on a bike ride - casual place with lots of great beers on tap, huge two-story outdoor patio with umbrellas for shade, and a good food selection too. I didn't expect a lot from the food, and to be honest, the menu is VERY heavy on fried food, but everything we tried was surprisingly good. I am a big fan of the fried pickle chips, and I would also recommend the "tackle box" - you get to sample the fried crab claws, crawfish tails, and a few other items. There is actually quite a bit of seafood on the menu (catfish, bluegill, shrimp and crawfish po' boys) and a decent lsit of burgers and other sandwiches. As I've mentioned, it's very heavy on the fried food, but nothing we had was excessively greasy or oily and we liked everything we tried. Well priced, good location right on the river, and a fun atmosphere (love the pictures of classic mullets everywhere). I'll definitely be back!

I had the Eggs Benedict, French Toast, and of course some yummy Mimosas! Everything was great and the prices very reasonable! It is very busy on the weekends though so you either want to get there early or come later on. Love the atmosphere if you are sitting out on the deck looking out onto the river. Can't wait to go back again! The staff was very friendly!

Mullets is a do-it-all place. Breakfast? Yep. Late-night? Yep. Bar? Yep. Roadhouse? Yep. They used to do pizza but now they do BBQ instead. Kinda sad about this. It's a Full Court Press place so they have a solid lineup of beers. They have the coolest patio overlooking downtown. A busy place before and after Iowa Cubs games. Right on the bike path! I mean right off it. The bike trail practically rolls right through the dining room. A popular meeting place for cyclists. Spandex is a common sight here. In fact, probably my favorite bike race of the year takes place in Mullets backyard each fall - racing under the lights with live music and plenty of booze - it's a great time. Food is solid here and menu is pretty extensive. Like I said you can come here for a lot of different thinks - drinks, breakfast, lunch, dinner...

Mullets has a great location on the river, right off the bike path. It's close to Principal Park. They have good nachos. It's good for people watching. These are the positives. I used to really enjoy going here until they combined with Woody's Smoke Shack. Since then, I feel the service and the foods I used to enjoy going there for (namely, brunch) have been lacking. Their oatmeal used to be my go to breakfast food, but lately it's been flavorless and over cooked. Today, it took my friend and I 20 minutes, SITTING AT THE BAR, to get our bill. If I'm just going for nachos and drinks, it's an alright place, but they've got to get back on track to be a destination for me.

Loved the patio seating here. Great view of the bike trails and of principal park from the south east side of the river. I ordered the chicken avocado Philly with mixed fries (curly and crinkle cut). Portions were big. The chicken avo Philly tasted great and was very filling. My dining partner ordered the wild Wild West burger with potato salad. The Wild West BBQ is loaded with BBQ sauce. The patty is huge ... A little too big for the bun, but if you like more meat this is the burger for you. I loved the potato salad cause it was sweet with a smoky bacon flavor. My dining partner didn't like it because he prefers more mustard tangy potato salad. Also had the nachos with pulled pork. This was alright, but I think the sandwich was by far the star. Our food came out very quickly and our server was very nice.

Customer service was on point the minute we stepped in the door, from the hostess to our waitress-who brought us our endless request for beverages with a great smile and sense of humor. Unlike other places they didn't give us any attitude with our big group. On a cooler day it would have been great to check out the huge patio but the windows allowed the sun and scenery in-if mullets are your thing you'll love all the pictures adorning the wall, but other than that there isn't much to look at. Great place for brunch-The avocados were fantastic and they have loads of potato options (a big winner for us!)

Hands down some of the worst service I've ever had in dsm. Mullets used to be pretty good and then they merged with woodys! Don't get me wrong I love both places separately but something went way south when hiring mostly new staff with the merging of restaurants. I love riding bikes and mullets used to be a great rest stop from long trail rides and meeting up with friends, Not anymore. The łast 4x I've been here they have screwed up my very easy order and I've had hair in my food. Now being in the service industry for many years I know it happens sometimes but it was just the icing on the cake after my last dining experience at mullets. Hands down it just went terribly wrong. I walked in and it wasn't busy at all so we were instantly seated. We waited 15 minutes for our server to come greet us. Of course we were ready for our full order by that time. We all asked for water, bloody Mary's and my friend ordered chips and salsa for an appetizer along with ordering our meals. We got our chips before any of our drinks and we had to ask a second time for our waters. When my order came out with the wrong eggs I let the runner know and he quickly went back and had the correct eggs made for me. Which was much appreciated. I had a side of jalapeños to add to my meal and right on top of the ramekin there was about a 2 inch long hair hanging out of it. Awesome. We waited about another 25 minutes after we were done eating for our server to even see if we were doing ok? I asked for the bill and she asked if it was separate I stated, "yes it was." It took her another 15minutes for us to get our 2 bills and she ended up putting my friends appetizer on my bill. At this point I had enough. I just ended up paying for her appetizer because I wanted to get out of there. It definitely seems like this place need to have some serious training on customers service. I will not be dining at mullets for a long time and maybe never again. I'd rather go home and make myself something else to eat than go out to mullets be served like the ugly duckling in the room. I really hate leaving reviews like this but I hope that this review helps the management get there act together because mullets has the potential of being a really great place. Right off the bike trail, great view of the city and patio to die for.

Another spot in Des Moines I've been waiting to try since I've moved here! Came here with a group of coworkers last week during lunch and had a great time! Located right next to the Scott St Bridge, the view of Downtown Des Moines and the river is very nice! They were not busy during the lunch hour so we were serviced quick and without issues. We started off with Beef Brisket Nachos to share and I had the Cajun PoBoy which contained fried shrimp and crawfish! The nachos were very flavorful and came hot, it was a good sized portion. The Cajun PoBoy was fantastic! They packed everything onto this sandwich and it was a challenge just to close it up and handle it! I got fries with the PoBoy and they were very good as well. The atmosphere is very casual and the theme is mullets (the fish and the hairstyle), I thought this was very clever. I always wanted to try their breakfast menu which looks very appetizing. Perhaps next time I will make it there for breakfast!

Loved it. Our group picked a great day outside to visit this place and enjoyed the outdoor seating and view of the city. Service was quick and accurate. Our group of five was satisfied with all their food choices and drinks. They even made special accommodations for us to creat our own drinks. I recommend the morning mullet!

Now that the weather is getting better, Mullets is always a fun place to roll over to on your bike! Right off the bike path this is a great beer and food stop! They have lots of options for better then average bar food, including quite a few good things for Vegans or Veggie friendly bike riders.. They have a great burrito, great veggie burger, and there salads are huge! I must admit I do like the fries, and onion rings as well! One of my favorite things about this place is how much outdoor seating they have! They have a rooftop deck and also, picnic tables outside, perfect for stopping and chilling in the sun after and I-Cubs game or a pit stop on an afternoon bike ride! The service is always pretty good as well! The inside of Mullet's does not have a ton of character and the bathroom's sometimes are pretty smelly but what it lacks in coolness I can forgive because the food is good, the people are great, and the outdoor seating rules!

I'd lean more towards 3.5 and could see myself going up to 4 if the patio it were summer time and we'd sampled the patio. Great Bloody Mary and my salmon skillet was pretty good...it got a solid head nod. My wife got the nachos, which weren't the best, and someone else got a burger that was just ok. What ever happened to cooking burgers to order? Since I moved here, almost every burger just comes out one way: well done. Frustration reigning supreme. Interior is comfortable without being too kitchy, given the name. You've got some framed famous mullet photos mixed in with a lot of random license plates (?), but it's not overkill. Like I said, this place is probably 4 stars in the summer if for nothing else than the decent beer list, patio and nice view of the skyline and Principal Park.

Dinner was not good, don't expect restaurant quality, only order bar type food, beer selection is just ok. Staff was unhappy and lethargic, although.... I have had breakfast here and it was good and a good Bloody Mary.

This place is nothing fancy, but it sure hits the spot when you want a decent priced meal. Breakfast in particular is my favorite meal here, specifically on Saturday and Sunday, since they serve it until 1 pm. Their chorizo breakfast tacos and breakfast burritos are really good. (This is coming from someone who is Mexican, from San Antonio, Texas, and a breakfast taco snob.) My husband and I have came here for breakfast many times, with a bill that was 20 bucks and left fat and happy. The service has been consistently cool, and just straight up, not that overly fake friendliness trying to work for a tip type of service.

Visiting Des Moines from the Quad Cities, and we loved this place! As soon as you park you can smell the smoked meats! Couldn't have asked for better service from our waiter Zach and the manager Niem (sp?) I had the breakfast burrito, and it was muy delicioso! The menu had plenty of oldie but goodies, and a few fun creations! I would have given this place a 5 if they had a couple more unique menu items to choose from. We would definitely love to come back again! Plus, it looked like it was very biker friendly!!

We thoroughly enjoyed our experience here it started with top notch service from LINDSEY. She recommended good local Iowa brews, and the bar also made a great spicy Bloody Mary. The menu was very diverse to accommodate most taste, my wife has celiacs and they offer a great gluten free pizza so she wasn't stuck eating a salad again. I had the Sandburg po'boy which was excellent and probably not something I will ever see on a menu again. All in all next time I'm back in Iowa visiting family I said that this will be a must every time we are in town.

This is one of the best places in Des Moines for people watching. If you can get a seat on the patio you can kick back with a cold drink and see all the traffic coming and going on the bike path. Service is generally good, food is okay---its the regular bar stuff---a surplus of fried choices. But there's just something about it that its a great place to go with friends. In a different location, it would just be run of the mill, but across from the ball park, the bike path right there.....it all just comes together.

    (4)
  • Michael M.

The patio is easily the best feature of this place. It is also right on the bike path, and a stone's throw from Principal Park. The food is okay and the service is great. Our sliders weren't bad, but weren't great either. Overall, I would say this is an excellent option if you are cycling, or looking for a place walking distance before the Cubs game. Otherwise, I don't think I would go out of my way to eat here again.

Great spot for lunch. We had a great view of the river and saw two bald eagles throughout lunch. that alone is worth a few stars. Food is standard bar fare, and they do it pretty well. Burger was good and I liked the "fries medley" it came with - a mix of curly fries and crinkle cut, which is great for indecisive folks like me. BF had the sweet potato tater tots and I wasn't a fan (despite loving sweet potatoes and tater tots). They just didn't do it for me. The atmosphere is fun too - lots of photos of guys with mullets all over the wall, and the mullet-era music was a nice touch. Service was really friendly and attentive. This is a great spot!

This is a fun place for breakfast and lunch (it's likely also great for dinner, but I've only tried it for the first two). While clearly styled as a dive bar (lots of kitschy signs and a fantastic photo display of patrons and celebrities sporting their namesake haircut), and they have a lot of good natured fun with it, the food is seriously good and the service is friendly, prompt and well-trained. Their po'boys are especially delicious, in my opinion, and they have all sorts from which to choose (ranging from the classic shrimp and crawfish to even a couple vegetarian options). They also have INCREDIBLE nachos, which you can have topped with Graziano's brand sausage, brisket, or chicken, and they are delicious! The other appetizers are almost as delicious (and by that, I mean every one I've tried is excellent, but the nachos are just something extra special, in my opinion). Their burgers look good, but I've never tried them. And their breakfasts may be their strongest suit of all, and I'm not a big breakfast fan. Go with a spirit of fun and adventure in your heart and you will not leave hungry or disappointed!

Fun food and atmosphere. The food is nothing over the top, but a good bite to eat. The atmosphere is fun and staff are attentive. Portions on the baskets are enormous. Good prices. I'll be back!

This place was almost a 5 star experience. I know what you are thinking. "How can a bar like this be even close to 5 stars?" Well, It could have been the perfect timing of: 4th day of RAGBRAI. We needed breakfast. My local friends said, "Mullets." Right on the bike path. Beer was ice cold and waiting as soon as we parked our bikes. Breakfast beer of the day was Old Style... (I'll make a note to try a different beer next time) Great seats on the patio... For all 10 of us. And the food, I had the Breakfast Meatloaf ( pork sausage meatloaf made with bacon, red pepper, potato, mushroom and onion, topped with two eggs and Monterey cheese sauce) Service was slow, they were pretty busy... Then back on the bikes and off for more adventures. I see why my biking friends love this place.

Was here last Monday on our bike ride. Great bike trail location. The service was very good and the food was not bad!! They have lots if beers on tap and they'll even fill up yer water bottle with nice cold ice water! The place has pictures of people, famous and otherwise with mullets all over the walls, along with license plates from Ll over!! Lol They play 80's music and it's def a nice place to visit when yer downtown!

World Class breakfast spot! Meeting a coworker here for a breakfast meeting, there are a ton of choices for the healthy or indulgent eater in all of us! I had a poached egg on multigrain toast. They get a daily delivery of bread from the local bakery.....this bread was so good that I took home my leftover toast & who can say they EVER do that? I never have before, I can tell you *that* Eggs are organic from free-range, local farms Pork products come from the local sausage-maker & delivered fresh - they also make their own chorizo, in house, from the freshly-delivered sausage I'm telling you, this place takes "go local" to the extreme & you can totally tell the difference! Others in our group ordered: Chorizo Hash w/ English Muffin - this was a "just give me my usual" kind of dish - coworker gets this every morning - he's a regular Eggs, Sausage, Toast, & Homefries (for 2) - plates totally cleaned! Fun conversations w/ our super-nice waitperson & w/ each other. Totally enjoyable start to the day And if that weren't awesome enough, they were piping in 80s music & that *always* scores a special place in my heart! Would definitely make Mullets a regular breakfast stop when next in Des Moines

Not impressed. The menu has little variety and the food was boring nothing special. The biggest draw back was a few staff members hanging out around the bar. A lot of flirting and touching. It was extremely uncomfortable and couldn't wait to leave. We won't be returning.

Made my first stop for food here a few weeks back. Unfortunately it was in the middle of winter so I wasn't able to take advantage of the rooftop patio. This is something I will look forward to when it warms up. The place is real cozy inside, with cedar wood walls and just an all around nice looking place, like a roadside restaurant down south. The food has some resemblance to the old menu at Buzzard Billy's, which was owned by the same group. The menu focuses on fish and deep south cuisine. I especially like their po-boys, which is something I missed when Buzzard Billy's closed. We also shared an order of the sweet potato tater tots which are served with a side of melted marshmallow sauce. Definitely out of the ordinary but it was really good!

The food was absolutely amazing, and I had the best bloody mary of my entire life. The service was the only bad part about the entire experience, but it was a super busy saturday breakfast.

Mullets 1300 SE 1st St Des Moines, IA 50315 (515) 244-1443 Price range: (everyday, a night out, a special occasion only) everyday Overall rankings all based 1 to 5 Atmosphere: 4 Service: 3 Food: 4 Value: 4 Overall 4
